In present GaN-on-Diamond devices a thin dielectric layer is required on the GaN surface to enable seeding and successful deposition of diamond onto the GaN. Unfortunately, most of the thermal barrier in these devices then exists at this GaN-dielectric-diamond interface, which has much poorer thermal conductivity than desired. Any reduction in this thermal resistance, either by removing the need for a dielectric seeding layer for diamond growth, or by optimizing the grain structure of the diamond near the seeding, would be of huge benefit.

A team of physicists and chemists from the University of Bristol hope to recycle radioactive material directly from a former nuclear power plant in Gloucestershire to generate ultra-long-lasting power sources. Work has begun at Berkeley Power Station in to remove radioactive waste products from the site as part of its decommissioning programme. By extracting Carbon isotopes from the irradiated graphite, the time and cost of the clean-up operation would be significantly reduced.

Diamond Rio

Diamond battery is the name of a prototype battery proposed by the University of Bristol Cabot Institute during their annual lecture [1] held on 25 November at the Wills Memorial Building. This battery is proposed to run on the radioactivity of waste graphite blocks previously used as neutron moderator material in nuclear reactors and would last for thousands of years.

The battery, developed by the University of Bristol , is a betavoltaic cell using carbon C in the form of diamond-like carbon DLC as the beta radiation source, and additional normal-carbon DLC to make the necessary semiconductor junction and encapsulate the carbon In initial prototypes, nickel has been used as the radioactive source for the diamond.

Abstract The study of mineral inclusions in diamonds offers a unique opportunity to investigate the nature of different diamond-forming events and the conditions under which they took place. Sulphide inclusions are over-represented in many lithospheric diamond populations worldwide e.

Gurney et al. Sulphide inclusions could be genetically linked with their host diamonds providing an insight into diamond-forming reactions and related processes. The different attributes of sulphide inclusions in diamonds from different localities worldwide have been investigated using a variety of non- and minimally destructive spectroscopic and analytical techniques.

The first chapter provides a summary of the global sulphur cycle and presents an overview of what is known in literature about sulphide inclusions in diamonds. In the second chapter, diamond-forming reactions involving sulphur-bearing materials are explored; petrological observations of sulphide inclusions and their internal features are provided by means of Raman spectroscopy, computed x-ray microtomography x-CT and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy FT-IR spectroscopy, adding to the knowledge of what is known about the nature of the involvement of sulphides in diamond formation.

The presence of molybdenite as a disseminated phase inside the body and rosette fractures of intact diamond-hosted sulphide inclusions from Mir Yakutia is reported in the third chapter, alongside the potential effects of its presence on Re-Os systematics within sulphide inclusions and implications for radiometric dating. Further observations on the pervasive occurrence of molybdenite inside sulphide inclusions in diamonds from worldwide localities are presented in the fourth chapter; different reasons to explain the presence of molybdenite, and the origin of Mo, are considered.

Sulphides can provide interesting insights into the behaviour of trace elements such as Mo in the mantle, and as the principal hosts of siderophile elements, serve as time capsules due to their Re and Os compositions.
